Many years after returning home from World War I, Pippin painstakingly trained himself to paint. He had sustained an injury to his right arm rendering it partially paralyzed. Using his left hand and arm, he held up his right to guide his brush. This tiny self-portrait was orginally 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, painted in 1944.
