The title of this painting comes from the lyrics of a sentimental ballad by Stephen Foster titled "Old Joe Black." The Farnsworth Television and Radio Corporation asked Horace Pippin to paint this piece and it was later used in advertising to promote the power of music. "Gone are the days when my heart was young and gay, Gone are my friends from the cotton fields away, Gone from the earth to a better land I know, I hear their gentle voices calling 'Old Black Joe.'" Visit the Poetry Foundation for the full lyrics.
