Pre-Raphaelite

In rejection of the British Royal Academy's dominance, the Pre-Raphaelites, or Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, sought to continue the artistic vision from before the Italian High Renaissance. Artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, one of the fathers of the brotherhood, and John William Waterhouse, wanted to return to the realistic depictions of nature and the human form, discarding the idealization of the current aesthetic dominance of Victorian subjects and styles. This revival of the Medieval styles from long ago influenced the emergence of the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements.
