Susan Waters was one of many women folk artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. She was however unusual in that she traveled from town to town in search of commissions to earn a living when her husband fell ill, a practice most often left to men. The little girls in this portrait, Laura Eugenie, Sara, and Augusta are three of the twelve children of Otis Lincoln, an innkeeper from Newark Valley, New York.
