"The Coming Storm" was painted in June, 1916 while Bellows and his family were vacationing in Camden, Maine. At this time, Bellows was using the Maratta palette developed by H.G. Maratta which related color to the keys of a piano. The color used in this painting is fairly strong but the overall tonality is overcast.
