From French nature morte, still life as subject in painting, a still-life painting from nature + morte, feminine of mort (adjective) dead. Originated in middle ages, it became a distinct art genre in Western Europe by the end of 16th century. The rise of a wealthy middle class interested in decorating their homes with something other that family portraiture contributed to the popularity of still-life painting which remains the most popular decorative art to this day.
Some of the most known artists of the still life genre are renowned artists including Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, Jaun Gris, Henri Fantin-Latour, Odilon Redon... just to name a few.
